This is a short and sweet post. I was trying to merge and sync all my calendars (something I do every so often which leaves me frustrated, drunk and huddled in a corner crying) and decided on google calendar as a main point since I have my work Outlook synced up with it (using their outlook sync program). I setup a simple WebDAV url on my good ole’ dreamhost and had a password protected directory to publish my schedule to from iCal.

iCal can publish to a password protected directory just fine — but to my surprise, google calendar could _not_ read from one… _only_ public urls. Wtf? I’m really hoping I overlooked something because this is just pathetic.

Anyway, the solution turned out to be dirt simple. Keep all protected calendars in a /private folder on my domain and have a public facing script to route stuff. So I went to work, and a few minutes later, here it is.

I tested this just now and google calendar can indeed read my password protected calendar so thats cool. It isn’t the best way I’m sure — but, hey, it only took a few minutes (edit: less time than it took to write this post in fact) and it gets the job done. (Plus I don’t exactly have a “personal” personal calendar, I’d just rather it not be public.)

view the protected ical calendars in google project page

Hope that can help someone. Or if there were any suggestions feel free to e-mail me

Some Great Windows Programs

I’ve stated numerous times that I really am not a huge fan of the mouse and clicking and all that jazz. Without further ado, here are my top 3 favorite “make life easier by not making me jump through hoops to do simple chores” applications.

Number 1 – Bayden’s SlickRun
http://www.bayden.com/SlickRun/

This app is amazing. On my Mac I use Quicksilver, but on a PC it is hard to find an application to compete with that. I’ve tried 90% of the launchers out there, and they just aren’t what I want.

This app is exactly what I need. It hangs out in the bottom of the screen, out of the way, and when I need it I throw a hot-key out to bring it up. It uses ‘magic words’ instead of hunting for what you want. Why is this better? Because, for example, if I want firefox all I type is ‘ff’ instead of the full name – which most launchers want. Search for google images? No problem ‘gi search_term’. I was using a Yahoo! widget for this (LaunchIt) but the overhead of the Yahoo! widgets was annoying.

Adding a magic word is as simple as entering a command string, and assigning a program or URL. It also supports a ‘@MULTI@’ keyword that will preform, get this, multiple actions at once. God I love this program.

(Configuration Screenshot – click for larger image)

Number 2 – Virtual Dimension (Virtual Desktop)
http://virt-dimension.sourceforge.net/

What’s to be said. Windows should have had virtual desktops from day 1 — OS X for that matter too, although their window management is superior to Windows. Being an on-again-off-again linux user, I’ve come to love virtual desktops. It also supports drag-and-drop of icons for switching desktops, which is awesome.

Number 3 – Taskbar Shuffle
http://www.freewebs.com/nerdcave/taskbarshuffle.htm

Very simple application that allows you to drag & drop your taskbar items. Useful if you are switching between 2 programs and would like them next to eachother, or if you just like to stay organized. Not too much to say about this, it is a very simple, effective program.

Imagine if every aspect of your personal life was affected by corporate ‘rules’. How much would that fucking suck? Just picture putting in 2 weeks notice before breaking up with your girlfriend.. then having to help interview / train for the new ‘position’. Ouch. Although, they do have 1 thing in common – if you fuckup you endup with a box full of your shit by the end of the day in both cases.

What if you had to setup weekly meetings just to analyze your life? (I do this anyway, I like to call it a “bar”) Or everytime you made a friend you had to bring them up to speed on every aspect of your life as fast as possible? If you wanted to goto the shore for the weekend you would have to alert yourself 5-7 days in advance to get it cleared.

On the upsides it could justify a lot of things. Say you wanted don’t want to do the grocery shopping. You could just say ‘NMJ’ (not my job). When its time to clean the bathroom, NMJ. Want to splurge on buying 93 octane gas, or buy that fancy gadget? Write it off!

I think I’m going to start doing this. Every week I will bust out the spreadsheets and run my numbers. If they aren’t what I want I will start to fire friends, parents, women, pets, etc.
